Hey actors, ever wanted to perform with zero risk? Are you itching to break out a new character that you’ve never been given the chance to play? Have you been looking for a chance to be on the stage? Crash Test Theatre (CTT) is the platform for actors who are not afraid to try something new, and for anyone who wants to try their hand at the craft. Featuring new works by selected writers, actors who sign up for CTT get to workshop the scripts and perform a dramatised reading this Saturday at Aliwal Arts Centre. Crash Test’s workshop will consist of ensemble training, storytelling improvisation and light-hearted devising, followed by a rehearsal for the dramatised reading with the writers. Once everyone has had a chance to practice and familiarise themselves with the text, a performance will be staged in front of a live audience. There will be a special prize for Best Actor and Best Performance Team at the end of the night! Each performance will be judged by a panel of esteemed theatre practitioners, along with votes from the audience. One of the judges for Crash Test Theatre is Andrew James Mowett, an accomplished actor and Drama educator. He has worked as an actor in the UK, and since moving to Singapore, he has worked with major theatre companies and has also worked on local TV and film productions. Andrew won the Best Actor Award at the 2010 Short and Sweet Theatre Festival and he was also nominated for Best Actor in The Straits Times Life! Awards in 2006. Crash Test Theatre’s Coordinator, Shana Yap, is a working actor herself. Together with The Writers Center Singapore, she hopes to give fresh and seasoned actors the opportunity to create work that has never been staged before.
“Singapore has made a name for itself with a particular brand of theatre that plays safe aesthetics.” Shana says, “I’m looking to remove the boxes and gantries that actors have to confine themselves to, so that we can create original works for ourselves.” Come and join a growing pool of fresh acting talent in Singapore with Crash Test Theatre! When a director is given a script and looks over the material, they’ll ask, “Who’s the writer?” When the actors are at their first read and trying to understand the roles they play, they’ll ask, “Who’s the writer?” When the curtain closes and the audience streams out of the theatre, they clutch their programme booklets and ask, “Who’s this writer?”
Do you want to be that writer? Crash Test Theatre (CTT) has just the platform you need to take your writing from the page to the stage. CTT is based on the popular Crash Test Drama, Australia where it’s been running for a decade. Now, for the first time in Singapore, actors and directors from various backgrounds will be coming together to perform dramatised readings of plays never-before-seen! According to CTT Coordinator, Shana Yap, “Crash Test seeks to develop a collaborative spirit around theatre-making by providing an open space for writers, actors, directors and everyone in between to create work together.” The event, organised by The Writers Centre Singapore (TWCS), also hopes to expand artists’ horizons by encouraging dual-role opportunities. Writers are highly encouraged to take the wheel and direct their own work. “The emphasis of Crash Test Theatre is to involve the writer and help them shape or reshape their work.” TWCS Director Chris Mooney-Singh says of the event, “It also gives the writers a stake in the process, not just cut out by a director if they aren't directing themselves.” Crash Test is looking for 10-minute plays. The submission date for writers has been extended to Wednesday, 25th July. Submission Details Writers Play Submission Deadline: (extended to) 25 July, 2359 hours. Running right now in several Australian cities as Crash Test Drama for over a decade, The Writers Centre Singapore has brought the unique play writing and performance platform to our shores. According to CTT Coordinator Shana Yap believes this is an incredible opportunity for budding and seasoned talent to develop local playwriting, directing and acting skills. “CTT is a platform for everyone, regardless of theatre training and experience to address current concerns and issues that affect us.” Shana also says that CTT is an open platform to ‘crash test’ new work. Teamed up during an afternoon workshop, writers, directors and actors will then present before an audience. If you are interested but can’t attend the workshop in the afternoon, join the audience and enjoy an early evening of dramatised play reads. The performances will be followed by a post-plays discussion and a chance to improvise ideas for the next CTT event in August. “It’s gonna be a wild day of pure creativity and fun collaboration,” Shana says. CTT will be held at the Writers Centre Singapore’s black box in the Aliwal Arts Centre. Crash Test teams will also get a chance to win cash prizes, plus there will be featured prizes for Best Director and Best Actor. The best two plays performed each month will be featured in the finals as fully staged productions during Lit Up Asia Festival (Oct-13) at the Flexible Space, Lasalle College of the Arts. The best production will win the grand prize of $1000, with prizes for Best Director and Actor as well. Submission Details Writers Play Submission Deadline: (extended to) 25 July, 2359 hours.
